What causes Varicose Veins?

  • Hereditary
  • Pregnancy
  • Prolonged standing
  • Hormonal factors
  • Obesity
  • Idiopathic

SYMPTOMS Include

  • Achy legs, legs feel heavy
  • Swollen
  • Spider veins, venous eczema (stasis dermatitis), restless leg syndrome
  • Individuals who are overweight have an increased risk of varicose veins
  • Lipodermatosclerosis: Fat under the skin just above the ankle can become hard, resulting in skin shrinking
  • When suddenly standing, some individuals experience leg cramps
  • Atrophie blanche - Irregular white patches that look like scars appear at ankles

Minor injury to the affected area results in longer bleeding than normal.

Shiny skin discoloration near varicose veins, usually brownish or blue or color.

In extreme cases, varicose veins may rupture, or develop into varicose ulcers on the skin. These will require treatment.

Treatment options

  • Initial stages - Compression Stockings
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Suitable for smaller varicose veins or as an additional treatment in which your vascular therapist will inject chemicals directly in the varicose veins to block them.
  • If varicose veins are large, and if patients are symptomatic requires surgery

Laser for Varicose Veins

A catheter is inserted into the patient’s vein. A small laser is taken and threaded through the catheter and positioned at the top of the target vein. It conveys short energy bursts that heat up the vein, sealing it shut. With the aid of an ultrasound scan, the specialist threads the laser the way up the vein, gently burning and fixing it.

Benefits of choosing laser therapy for Varicose Veins

  • Day care procedure, no admission is required
  • Resume daily activities immediately
  • Minimal or no pain
  • Little or no scarring
  • High success rate

Complications of Varicose Veins if left untreated

  • Bleeding
  • Thrombophlebitis - Blood clots in the vein of the leg cause inflammation of veins
  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency

The skin does not exchange oxygen, nutrients, and waste products with the blood properly because blood flow is feeble.
